Nola is badly screwed when a video is distributed at school showing her being dumped by her boyfriend Jesse. Her grief and jealousy get her into even more trouble: she is no longer allowed to attend camp. Popular Fenna takes advantage of this, as she wants to win over handsome Jesse. Ann Dexter, daughter of an itinerant Haiti waterfront character, Carl Dexter, brings a golden idol, which her father her stolen at a voodoo ceremony, to Bill Buchanan, who is known along the waterfront as a man eternally on a treasure hunt.
