Hearts collide when the conniving Jaggan (Prem Chopra) convinces Kishan (Amol Palekar) that his wife, Shanti (Rakhee Gulzar), is having an affair with his brother Shambhu (Rajesh Khanna). Of course, all this is done so that Kishan will marry Jaggan's cousin Tulsi (Rekha) according to Jaggan's master plan … even though Tulsi would much rather marry Shambhu. Confused? Don't worry. So are these weary lovers!

La Sposa del Nilo (1911) was a proto-epic, where you could sense the Italian filmmakers (Enrico Guazzoni in this case) gearing up to the gigantic imaginings of Cabiria and Quo Vadis just a few years on. The film wanted to impress you with its stateliness and scale; at time the central action (a young virgin is drowned to appease Isis and ensure that the Nile floods) became lost in the crowded frame – but that just reminded you that early cinema audiences look that much more intently at what was going on, and picked up on details that our lazier eyes sometimes miss.

In the second part, the whale is butchered at a whaling station. A lady with a parasol looks on, while in the background are the sailing ships used to hunt whales. These are excerpts from a 1909 film called "La Pêche à Baleine dans les mers du Sud" made by Jean Nédelec and cut down in the 1920's for the Pathé Baby home movie projector.
