Balkan Is Not Dead

The film consists of fragments of feature films of the twenties. They reflect the life of the country from a variety of sides: we see how people work, eat, drink, have fun, suffer, love.

Rado, an orphan from a poor Sofia neighborhood, has been in and out of school for troubled youth for years. Although he is approaching adulthood, he is yet to finish 8th grade. He cannot reconcile his pride and sense of justice with the kind of education provided by people who are deprived of sensibility and human warmth. Rado asserts his right to freedom by frequently running away. During one of his escapes he meets the love of his life, Albena. She is a good student, and comes from a well-educated, sophisticated family. This new and unexpected connection intensifies Rado's desire for freedom and independence, and leads them both into uncharted territory.

The father of ten-year-old Lusha, the unsuccessful writer Boris Kolechkin, works as a sales consultant for Lyosha's mother Alina. She once preferred him to Sergei Mamontov, on whom the fate of her business now depends. Alina, Lusha and Boris, at the invitation of Amiantov, go to his New Year's carnival. There, a duel begins between the men. The soul helps the father as much as it can. The Kolechkins are unaware that the stolen ring of the ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti was hidden in the half-eaten hot dogs that the homeless dog Caruso treated their dog Christie to. The kidnappers of the priceless ring arrange a hunt for Christie in the absence of the owners of the Kolechkin house. They are confronted by Caruso, who is in love with Christie, who has been sheltered by his family.

The cunning and wicked Urfin wants to become ruler of Magic Land. With an army of wooden soldiers, he captures the Emerald City and renames it ti Urfinville. He is all but ready to celebrate victory, when his plans are ruined by an ordinary girl named Dorothy, who arrives in Magic Land just at the right time. She must return home, but not before she helps her friends - the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and new-brave Lion - defeat Urfin. And in order to do that, they need to find out who he really is.

Before the three feature films, Mario Schifano directs the camera towards the people around him to create real film diaries. His friends, his time partner and the artists he frequented are portrayed in their everyday life or object of the mechanical gaze of the camera, a filter through which to look at the outside world.
